Potato Realm

For my Compositing 2 class the final project required creating a composite that involved some form of tracking, whether object tracking or 3D scene tracking, with 3D elements composited into footage we recorded ourselves.

My concept was that my character has a superpower that lets them open a door to a potato realm. The potato theme came from a loose creative brief our group had, even though we were each working on independent shots. Everyone needed to have some kind of potato-related power.

I used SynthEyes to track the footage and export the camera track to Maya. After cleaning up the track, I exported placeholder geometry and the camera separately into Unreal Engine where I did the final scene rendering.

All the final compositing was done in Nuke, combining the Unreal renders with the recorded plates. I rendered multiple passes to get fine details like reflections just right and make sure everything matched the environment lighting and felt like it belonged in the shot.
